I race out of the bridge, past the mess and the storage closets, past the library and dry lab, and down the back stairs that let you out right near the schematic of the ship and the laundry room.

I stop and stare at the schematic and breathe hard, thinking.

It always smells good around here. Not like fish, and the endless wet Muck boots. More like breezy cotton freshness and home.

The Oceania II laundry room is the cleanest place on the ship. Not fancy, just clean, with two huge industrial washers, and one huge industrial dryer. All of them taller than my head. Plus, it has these cool huge industrial laundry baskets on wheels, filled with clean white sheets and towels.

If Nicky were here, he and me would totally have to race each other around in them.

I walk in and stick my nose down into one of the baskets piled high with folded towels—ahhh, fresh—then keep my head in there, because seriously, the clean fresh smell is helping me think.

The real Alex Mylanakos—because, see, now I remember the right way to say it—was a boy. Is a boy.

But he’s not here now, and the only Alex Mylanakos present is a girl.

A girl, let’s say, who skipped some grades and is a high school SEAmester kid.

That’s gotta be our story, so we’re sticking with it.

I pick my head up and nod, trying to make myself feel sure of all of this, but then I stick it right back down and in again.

Because where on earth is she going to sleep tonight?

That is a good question.
